Professor Peter Stanley of UNSW Canberra is one of Australia’s most active military social historians and latterly an historical novelist. He is the author of 30 books in Australian, British and British–Indian military and medical history, including Bad Characters: Sex, Crime, Mutiny, Murder and the Australian Imperial Force, which jointly won the 2011 Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History. A sometime member of the Arthur Ransome Society, Australia, he first read Swallows and Amazons as a 12-year-old in 1968.
