John Thompson is a historian and writer with a special interest in the collecting and preservation of the Australian documentary record in various physical formats. He commenced his career in the State Library of Victoria before joining the staff of the National Library of Australia, where he worked in a number of senior positions until 1999. He holds a PhD in history from the Australian National University and is a frequent contributor to various journals including
Meanjin and
Australian Book Review. With Brenda Niall he co-edited
The Oxford Book of Australian Letters (1998).
